May 1, 1998 – The movie He Got Game was released in theaters

He Got Game is a 1998 American sports-drama film written and directed by Spike Lee. It stars Denzel Washington as Jake Shuttlesworth, a prison inmate convicted for killing his wife. The father of the top-ranked basketball prospect in the country, Jesus Shuttlesworth (played by NBA star Ray Allen), Jake is released on parole for a week by the state’s governor in order to persuade his son to play for the governor’s alma mater in exchange for a heavily-reduced prison sentence. Filming took place between July and September 1997, and locations such as Coney Island, Brooklyn, Cabrini–Green housing projects in Chicago, Illinois, North Carolina, and Los Angeles, California.

He Got Game was produced on an estimated $25 million budget. In the opening weekend of its release, it was shown on 1,319 screens, and took in $7,610,663 at the U.S. box offices debuting at #1. It eventually grossed a total of $21,554,585.00.

Directed by Ron Howard, RUSH is centered around the 1976 Formula One season and the rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt, as well as Lauda’s comeback from his near fatal crash.

Apr. 7, 1993 – Twenty years ago today, The Sandlot was released

The Sandlot grossed $4 million in its opening weekend and a further $32 million through ticket sales. Figures for worldwide, VHS and DVD sales are estimated to be at $76 million. Since its release on both VHS and DVD, the film has become a cult favorite.

Mar. 27, 1992 – The movie, White Man Can’t Jump, was released in theaters by 20th Century Fox

White Man Can’t Jump is a comedy, drama, sports film written and directed by Ron Shelton and starred Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes as streetball hustlers, co-starring Rosie Perez.

The movie grossed $14,711,124 in 1,923 theaters in its opening weekend, with a total gross of $76,253,806 in the U.S. and $90,753,806 worldwide and was the 16th highest grossing movie of 1992.

Production:
Bob Lanier, Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks legend and Hall of Famer, was hired as basketball coach for the movie. He was impressed with Harrelson and Snipes, suggesting that both reached division III college basketball skill level. Marques Johnson has a supporting role as Raymond, who loses a game to Snipes and Harrelson. Johnson was a star player for UCLA’s 1974-75 national championship team coached by John Wooden and later played for the NBA’s Bucks, Clippers and Warriors. Freeman Williams, who played “Duck” Johnson, also had a distinguished NBA career, playing for the Clippers, Jazz, and Bullets from 1978-86. NBA player Gary Payton made an uncredited appearance as an unidentified street baller.
